What Tyson Fury saying 'Dick Turpin wore a mask' while retiring means | Boxing | Sport

In a video posted to his social media pages, Fury said: “Hi everybody! I’m going to make this short and sweet. I would like to announce my retirement from boxing.

“It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it, and I am going to end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody. See you on the other side.”

Dick Turpin was a famous, mask-wearing, Essex-based robber in the 1700s who would regularly hold up and rob stage coaches while on horseback. The phrase ‘At least Dick Turpin wore a mask’ is used by people who think they are being ripped off or flagrantly robbed.

Considering Fury used the cryptic phrase within his retirement message, it’s likely he is referring to either or both of his losses to Usyk. After each fight, the former WBC heavweight champion of the world was adamant that he had won, even going as far as saying the judges favoured the Ukrainian because his country was at war after the first loss and stating he was ‘robbed’ in the second bout.

After his second loss, Fury stormed out of the ring when he looked at the scorecards which saw all three judges award Usyk the victory with scores of 16-12. Referring to his promoter Frank Warren in his post-fight press conference, Fury said: “Frank had me three or four rounds up, a lot of people had me at least two.

“It is what it is, I am not going to cry over spilt milk, it has happened now. I have been in boxing all my life and you can’t change any decision, but I will always feel hard done by.

“When you don’t get a knockout, you can’t guarantee a win. I think I won both fights. There is no doubt in my mind I won this fight. I think Usyk got a Christmas gift but it’s not Oleksandr’s fault.”

Fury retires with a record of 34 victories, 24 by knockout, two losses and one draw.
