Tyson Fury can't hide how he really feels about dad John's sickening headbutt | Boxing | Sport

Tyson Fury was left stunned when he found his father, John, bleeding from his head after launching a sickening headbutt at a member of Oleksandr Usyk’s team in Saudi Arabia. The ugly incident set an ominous tone for fight week in Riyadh as the bitter rivals face off for the undisputed heavyweight championship on Saturday.

Dozens of videos emerged on social media as the fighters’ teams clashed at a promotional event, with John losing his cool and thrusting his head into that of one of Usyk’s team. The “Gypsy King’s” father was left with a cut on his forehead and blood gushing down his face as he was pictured screaming wildly in the faces of members of Team Usyk before both sides were separated.

Tyson entered the room soon after the incident, and he was left bemused by what he saw. The WBC heavyweight champ entered with his arms aloft shouting “Tyson, Tyson, Tyson” before noticing his father’s injury.

“What’s happened to your head, you silly —-?” Tyson said. “How have you cut yourself like that?” he added with a concerned expression before seemingly laughing it off and walking away.

After the brief conversation with his son, John bellowed to the packed room: “The greatest show on earth has begun here in Saudi Arabia! Enjoy! This is what it’s about, enjoyment and entertainment, and this is it! Welcome!”

John, 59, later apologised for the incident in an interview with Seconds Out. He said: “Sincere apologies to everybody involved. It’s just the way we are. Emotions and tensions are running high. He was a very disrespectful fella. If you come close in a fighting man’s space, you’re going to cop for something.

“What matters to me is respect for my son and he wasn’t showing any of it. He mentioned my son and that was it, so he had to have it. It doesn’t bother me [bleeding], it’s what we live for, we’re fighting people. That’s a regular occurrence to me.”

There is a deep rivalry between the teams after long and fractious negotiations last year saw the fight unable to be made until huge investment from the Saudi Arabian General Entertainment Authority facilitated a deal. The bitterness grew in February when the fight was postponed at just two weeks’ notice due to a cut Fury suffered in sparring.

The winner of Saturday’s fight will become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era, and the first undisputed ruler of the division since Lennox Lewis in 1999.
