Investigations revealed that the killings took place within the last three weeks as the gang engaged in brutal reprisal killings.

It was learnt that the fight initially started on July 20 when suspected ‘Area boys’ allegedly attacked the vigilante members employed by the Mainland Sawmillers Association in a fierce battle at the Okobaba sawmill.

Residents said the ‘touts’ abducted a member of the vigilante group employed by the sawmill to protect the market from thieves and arsonists.

The abduction did not go down well with the vigilante as they reported the matter at the Denton Police Station, but the police could not rescue the abducted man.

A member who spoke to our correspondent stated that the police should rid the market of thieves who disguise as ‘Area boys’.

He said: “The vigilantes were employed by the Lagos Mainland Sawmillers’ Association  to protect their planks and other tools because of the incessant theft at the Sawmill.  This did not however go down well with the boys because they are the ones collecting all sort of levies from the saw-millers and stealing from them.

“These notorious chaps went to the sawmill to steal planks and machines and they were apprehended by the vigilante. To our surprise, the ‘Area boys’ organized themselves and attacked the men protecting the sawmill and they kidnapped one of our members.

“We reported the incident to the police at Denton, but the policemen were scared to go to the Area boys’ enclave to recue our member. We succeeded in rescuing him but we discovered he had been severely beaten and left for death. We rushed him to the hospital and he has been on admission since them.”

It was learnt that following the fight, suspected Area boys in a show of supremacy stormed  Freeman and Borno streets in the area and stabbed three persons to death to retaliate the killing of their member.

They invaded shops and houses raiding and stealing in broad daylight.

A resident who simply identified himself as Tunde said: “These boys were many. They came with various weapons and attacked the residents and traders. They caused panic  as they raided shops with impunity  and they were shooting.  People lost a lot of goods and money. It was a horrible experience”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, said the police arrested four persons in connection with the violence.
