The Senate yesterday unanimously confirmed Mr. Abdullahi Adamu Kaugama as the Resident Electoral Commission (REC) of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday submitted the name of Kaugama to the Senate for confirmation in accordance with section 143 of the third schedule of the 1999 constitution.
Kaugama is replacing Alhaji Abdullahi Munkaila who represented Jigawa state at INEC before he died in an inferno in April in Kano.
When he was ushered into the chamber for the screening, Senator Kabiru Gaya of Kano South appealed that Kaugama should be allowed to take a bow and go in view of his exposure and integrity.
Also supporting Gaya’s plea, Senator Jibrin Barau said Kaugama’s records at INEC while he was national Secretary speaks volume of his performance.
But Senator Adamu Aliero said in view of the importance of INEC to the entrenchment of democracy, he should be allowed to answer questions of the Senators. He then asked Kaugama how he would contribute to the 2019 elections.
Responding, Kaugama said if confirmed, he would intensify efforts at enlightening the citizenry on the card readers.
While confirming him, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki urged Kaugama to contribute in improving INEC ahead of 2019 polls.
