Ryan Garcia issues chilling warning to Conor Benn as he accepts fight challenge | Boxing | Sport

Ryan Garcia has thrown down the gauntlet to Conor Benn for a summer showdown, issuing a chilling warning following his triumph over Devin Haney. Fresh off his decisive win against Haney on Saturday night, Garcia took a swing at Benn, hinting that the British pugilist might be in his crosshairs next.

Garcia came under fire for his antics on social media prior to clinching victory at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. He made history by being the first to send Haney to the canvas three times, dealing him his first professional defeat. Despite this, Garcia’s failure to make weight by three pounds meant he was unable to claim Haney’s WBC super lightweight title.

Benn praised Garcia’s display against Haney and gave a nod to Haney’s tenacity in bouncing back from the triple knockdown. Yet, when Garcia replied to Benn’s commendation with a quote tweet agreeing to the fight, he included a bizarre statement, doubling down on his eccentric online behaviour.

“Let’s run it in London at the 02 [arena.] I will fracture your spleen and then eat it. Shoutout London,” Garcia posted. In response to Garcia’s provocative comment, Benn shot back, cautioning him against trash-talking and pushing for the bout to be arranged without delay, promising to “smash Garcia’s teeth down his neck.”

While boxing enthusiasts were captivated by their online sparring, Garcia hit back, stressing his dedication to the sport but also highlighting Benn’s current inability to fight in his own country due to a ban from failed drug tests. Despite UK Anti-Doping initially lifting the ban, subsequent appeals by UKAD and the British Boxing Board of Control have maintained it, effectively keeping Benn out of the ring until further notice.

The online skirmish escalated as Benn challenged the idea that location was an issue, declaring his readiness to take on Garcia anywhere, suggesting no room for excuses. He even proposed a theme for their potential bout, “Para La Raza,” which means “For the Race” in English.

Benn has been active mainly in the Welterweight and Light Middleweight categories, whereas Garcia has made his mark in the Super Featherweight, Lightweight, and Light Welterweight classes. Following Garcia’s impressive outing against Haney, there was talk of a rematch being his next venture, something he seemed to agree to in the heat of the moment post-fight.

Yet, at the post-fight press conference, Garcia seemed to backtrack on the idea of an immediate rematch, voicing dissatisfaction with the referees’ treatment in the bout. Instead, he turned his attention to a bigger opponent, Sebastian Fundura, confidently stating his belief that he could secure a knockout victory.

“I had a vision to fight [Sebastian] Fundura at 154 [pounds],” Garcia revealed. “I don’t know why. I just feel I could knock him out. I know that’s really, really random. I just feel like I could get the title at 154,” he elaborated. “I fought guys that big before and I’ve knocked them out in sparring. Cold, slept them. I want to do it. Shout out Fundura, no disrespect.”

Garcia expressed concerns about his ability to slim down to 140 pounds again, arguing that his physique couldn’t tolerate it. He further doubted Haney’s readiness to modify weight for a rematch. Instead, Garcia showed preference for escalating up to 147 pounds, pointing out that he has never technically competed at 140 pounds.
