Ondo Assembly re-elects Akindele ss Speaker

The 8th House of Assembly in Ondo State was inaugurated on Monday with Speaker Jumoke Akindele re-elected to lead the House while Fatai Olotu was elected as Deputy Speaker.

The 7th Assembly had been dissolved at a valedictory session held earlier at the chamber of the Assembly, during which the new legislators were inaugurated for the commencement of the 8th Assembly.

The new lawmakers, made up of 21 members from the Peoples Democratic Party and five from the All Progressives Congress had been elected in the March 15 state assembly election.

At the commencement of the new Assembly on Monday, the Clerk of the House, Mr. Bode Aladeyelu, called for nomination from the members for the positions of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

A member, Olamide George, representing Akure North State Constituency, consequently nominated Akindele, from Okitipupa Constituency 1 as the Speaker of the Assembly and was seconded by Gbenga Araoyibo, representing Akoko Northwest 2 Constituency.

For the position of the Deputy Speaker, Adeniyi Malachi, representing Ilaje Constituency 2, nominated Olotu from Akoko Northeast Constituency, while Bamidele Oloyelologun seconded the nomination.

Both Akindele and Olotu are second timers in the Assembly having been first elected in 2011 on the platform of the Labour Party but the two had defected to the PDP last year when the state governor, Olusegun Mimiko, dumped the LP for the PDP.

In her inaugural speech, Akindele promised to work in harmony with her colleagues, assuring that the 8th Assembly would be more vibrant than ever under her leadership .

Akindele, who emerged the first female Speaker in the state in 2014, also called for the support and cooperation of her colleagues on legislative matters as well as general affairs of the Assembly.
