The Presidency on Friday said  that there was no going back on President Muhammadu Buhari’s plan to prune the number of federal ministries. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, stated this in an interview with our correspondent.

The president had disclosed at the Nigeria House in Cotonou on August 1 while interacting with the Nigerian community in Benin Republic that he planned to slash the number of ministries.

Buhariwas at the time on a one-day visit to Cotonou as the special guest of honour at the 55th Independence Day Anniversary of Benin Republic. There had been media reports that the president had accepted the recommendation of his Ahmed Joda-led transition committee to slash the number of ministries from 42 to 19 to save cost and make them more efficient.

Reports also had it that the incumbent administration would merge some ministries to ensure proper coordination of duties and better service delivery.

Shehu said however, that there would be no job losses in the process of pruning the ministries, departments and parastatals, adding that the process would be a very “painstaking thing” that would be done very carefully.

He said workers need not fear as the Buhari administration would not create unemployment, assuring that the president remained committed to his promise to create jobs.
