Mike Tyson and Jake Paul’s press conference descended into chaos as a young boy asked inappropriate questions littered with foul language. On Monday in New York City, Tyson and Paul came face-to-face for the first time since their blockbuster fight was announced.
Paul and Tyson are set to meet before 80,000 fans at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium while millions are due to tune in as the fight will be streamed exclusively on Netflix. While the YouTuber-turned-prizefighter has several fights under his belt, his meeting with iconic boxer Tyson – the youngest heavyweight champion in history – is a different proposition, even with a 30-year age gap between the pair.
The 57-year-old – who will be 58 when he steps into the ring – has not fought since hosting an exhibition with Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, a spectacle that drew huge pay-per-view numbers as the American returned to action for the first time since 2005. The fight with Paul has garnered plenty of attention, with fans tuning into the press conference stream online.
Hosted by Ariel Helwani, the press conference took an odd turn when questions began being asked by fans. The first set of questions was seized by a young boy, who surprised everyone with his language and question choices.
When given his chance to ask a question in the press conference, the young boy introduced himself and said: “I’m a big fan of both of you. You guys are both ——- legends and I just want to like-“
But before he could ask a question, Tyson said: “Where is your mother at?” – which drew laughs from the crowd.
The kid composed himself and asked how Tyson would compare Paul to boxers in the ‘90s. Tyson replied: “Well, Jake is his own person – he’s not like anybody else. He started his YouTube stuff and was successful, and we’re gonna see how far it can take him.” When the boy asked who would train him better, Tyson immediately said: “Me. Definitely me.”
Paul had a chance to defend himself, saying: “I think older fighters have more heart and balls and weren’t afraid, but I think newer fighters have more skill and technique and are sharper, so that’s why I would be a better coach.”
The kid was stunned by the answer before truly causing chaos. “So you think he has bigger balls? Who do you think has a higher body count? What’s your body count Jake?” While the crowd exclaimed and gasped, Tyson once again asked: “Where is this kid’s mother?”
The kid then yelled some incoherent words and foul language, much to the surprise of Tyson, Paul and host Helwani. It was an odd moment that was perhaps fitting regarding the remarkable event set to take place, with Paul and Tyson set to meet in the ring on July 20.
