The decision, according to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Sakah Mahmud, was a precautionary measure against outbreak of hostilities.

“Staff and students should leave the university quietly and ensure the safety of property and life. KWASU does not want any situation in which the ongoing temporary crisis, which would be safely and easily resolved by the grace of God, leads to the loss of any life,” Mahmud stated.

The development is the latest twist in a controversy between the university and the state government.

Citing “a relevant law” of the institution, the government had sent the vice chancellor, Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, on compulsory leave and announced the appointment of an acting vice chancellor. The move, however, drew condemnation from the chairman of the governing council, students’ leaders and some members of staff.

Students had reportedly issued a 24-hour ultimatum to government to rescind its decision.
