Jarrel Miller was arrested on Tuesday in Hollywood, Florida for carjacking without a weapon and burglary with assault, just over two weeks after suffering the first defeat of his professional boxing career against Daniel Dubois.
According to American news station WSVN 7, an employee was approached by a woman, who said she had left her mobile phone inside the truck, a black Dodge Ram, which had recently been repossessed by the dealership. As the employee went to grab the keys to the truck to help the woman retrieve her phone, Miller is alleged to have grabbed the employee from behind before placing him in a chokehold and slamming him to the ground.
The employee then claims Miller stole the keys and drove off in the pick-up truck. Police said Miller did not know that the truck had a tracker inside, which meant detectives were able to locate and arrest him.
Miller appeared before bond court on Wednesday where he was charged. “It is alleged that Mr. Miller first put the victim in a chokehold, then slammed him to the ground before robbing him,” said Assistant State Attorney Eric Linder. “[The employee] was doing nothing other than his job.”
“He enlisted the assistance of another individual to create a ruse, to distract the employee. It would appear that Mr. Miller, he knew what the plan was going to this business to get his car back, it would appear, by any means.”
Miller’s lawyers had argued for his charges to be dropped to a grand theft and a misdemeanour battery but the judge overseeing the hearing disagreed. “Taking into account the allegations in the probable cause affidavit, the level of force that was used, as well as the manner in which the offense took place, the court does find probable cause as to both counts,” the judge said.
This comes a little over two weeks after suffering a 10th-round stoppage loss to heavy-handed Brit Dubois on the ‘Day of Reckoning’ bill, headlined by Anthony Joshua vs Otto Wallin, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Miller, who hadn’t lost a professional bout before that night, ran out of gas in the later rounds and was pummeled against the ropes before referee Michael Alexander stepped in and waved off the contest.
In the lead-up to fight night, Miller had threatened to “kill” his adversary in the ring but was made to eat his words by ‘Triple D’.
