Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack on Friday in Borno State, the militant group said in a statement on Monday.
The Commanding Officer of the 149 Battalion, Lt. Col. Alari and 21 soldiers were killed in the attack.
In the statement, the group confirmed that the soldiers were met by a suicide bomber in an explosives-laden vehicle, followed by a battle in Timbuktu Triangle in Damboa, Borno State.
Though the vehicle was intercepted and destroyed by the troops, the shrapnel from the explosion tragically took the lives of those closest to the blast, including Alari.
Despite the attack, the troops neutralized more than 60 terrorists and recovered 14 AK-47 rifles, six RPG tubes, 18 motorcycles, and 24 AK-47 magazines
