Bruno Fernandes and Kai Havertz among 27 Premier League players on brink of suspension

Must read

As many as 27 Premier League players are on the verge of receiving suspensions for too many yellow cards.

Already, Manchester City will head to Aston Villa without midfield anchor Rodri. The Spaniard picked up a yellow card in the draw with Tottenham and won’t be available at Villa Park, which is a massive blow for Pep Guardiola. Jack Grealish, like his City team-mate, will also be suspended after picking up his fifth yellow of the season.

Games will come thick and fast throughout December with some leading lights at various clubs facing time out. Those who collect five Premier League yellow cards in the first half of the season – the first 19 games – will miss one match. We’re now 14 games in and the likes of Kai Havertz and Bruno Fernandes will be desperate to avoid another costly booking.

Aston Villa, who are flying high, have a trio of players who could be missing a game sooner rather than later, Douglas Luiz among them. Brighton centre-half Lewis Dunk and Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez are also fearing a fifth yellow card in the coming weeks.

Raheem Sterling, who is looking to get himself back into Gareth Southgate’s England squad, also has four yellow cards to his name. Newcastle’s absentee list is well documented and they could also be without Kieran Trippier for a game with the defender one card away from a ban.

A hand full of players have already served their one-match ban for picking up five yellow cards. The next ban they’re facing is a two-match ban for accumulating ten yellow cards. Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Newcastle star Anthony Gordon among them.

Here are all the players who have been shown four yellow cards:

Matty Cash (Aston Villa)

Lucas Digne (Aston Villa)
