About 35 Nigerians may have died in the stampede that occurred on Thursday during the Jamarat (symbolic stoning of the devil) on the outskirts of Mina during this year’s hajj exercise

One of the sources said though the census, verification and collation of Nigerian pilgrims was still ongoing across the states’ camps, not less than 35 Nigerians were fear killed in the stampede.

Another source, a health official said eight people were declared missing in one of the states but that as the officials were leaving one of those earlier declared missing resurfaced, adding she was at the Ka’aba in Makkah to observe tawaf (circumambulation rite).

While the Nigeria figures were not confirmed by officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the Saudi government, those of Iran 131, Morocco 87, India 14 Pakistan 7, Algeria 3, Indonesia 3 and Netherland 1 were confirmed by Saudi authorities.
