Former Political Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, has described the rebranding effort of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a waste of time. Gulak, who has instituted a suit against the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party over the vacant National Chairmanship of PDP, said he has exhausted all internal mechanism to ensure that the constitutional provisions are adhered to in filling the vacant chairmanship position. The former political adviser, who addressed a press conference in Abuja yesterday, said he is challenging the continued existence of NWC without being properly constituted.
“That is my case in court and it is on behalf of myself and the entire North-East zone consisting of six states that have been excluded and ignored by the Uche Secondus- led committee,” he said. He regretted that the North-east zone, even with two PDP states has nobody in the NWC whereas North-west with no PDP controlled state has two NWC officials – the national treasurer and national organising secretary.
“The entire North-East zone has nobody in the NWC and as such the constitution does not envisage that. We should not be short changed, we should not be excluded,” he said. Gulak said PDP may not make any impact in the next general elections if the right things are not done in time.
He alleged that PDP Acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus and other NWC members were working to extend their stay till next year against the party’s constitution, warning that such impunity which led to the colossal loss the party experienced in the last election is still reigning in the party. Meanwhile, the national leadership of the PDP has congratulated former President Goodluck Jonathan, over the celebration of his 58th birthday today.
The Acting Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, in a statement issued by the party’s national publicity secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, congratulated Jonathan on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the PDP family nationwide. The statement said:
“Your Excellency, the PDP and indeed all lovers of democracy world-over, join your family in giving thanks to the Almighty God for His numerous blessings in your life as you celebrate this milestone “We are indeed proud that in various ways you have demonstrated that the true essence of statesmanship lies in applying its uncommon values to the general good rather than self and that one get to the very top and yet remain honest and humble.
“As you mark your birthday, we pray God to continue to grant you good health, wisdom and many more years so that mankind will continue to draw from your wealth of experience, forthrightness and exceptional statesmanship. Happy Birthday, Your Excellency!”
